Wastewater Treatment Plants
Wastewater treatment plants clean sewage-contaminated water so that it can be returned to the environment. This contaminated water is delivered to a plant via a network of sewers connected to homes and other buildings in a community, where it is cleaned using a series of processes. These are containing pre-treatment,primary treatment, secondary treatment, sludge treatment and other treatment options.
What does Wastewater Treatment Plants do?
The main purpose of wastewater treatment is to remove as much suspended solids as possible before the rest of the water, or sewage, returns to the environment. When decomposed, solid matter consumes oxygen, which is needed by plants and animals living in water. “Primary treatment” removes approximately 60 percent of suspended solids from wastewater. This treatment also involves aerating (mixing) the wastewater to restore oxygen. Secondary treatment removes more than 90 percent of the suspension.
